Now more than ever, the world understands that educators are superheroes who deserve our admiration, praise, and support. While we all continue adjusting to our new realities at home, educators remain hard at work tackling new challenges in the school environment.

As a long-trusted preventive health partner in schools, Kaiser Permanente Educational Theatre is proud to offer our Resilience In School Environments: Understanding and Practice (RISE UP) Virtual workshop for educators. The digital learning experience gives teachers and administrators trauma-sensitive tools and skills to foster resiliency when we all need it most.

RISE UP for the New Reality This 12-minute video offers tools and support for educators and parents who are feeling overwhelmed by the new reality we find ourselves in. Using key concepts from the RISE UP workshop, the video discusses social isolation and social exhaustion, and offers ways to cope and thrive during this challenging time.”

Segment 1: Acknowledging Trauma and Building Resilience In this introductory segment, we frame the importance and impact a trauma-sensitive approach can have in a stressful situation. High stress interactions can sometimes make us feel like we are being attacked, so we explore the importance of checking our assumptions and exploring the link between upsetting behavior and trauma.

Segment 2: Survival Brain vs. Learning Brain Participants are introduced to the concept of survival brain vs. learning brain, and are encouraged to name their emotions in upsetting situations. They are also introduced to substitution techniques that hone in on empathy as a powerful regulation tool.

Segment 3: Self-Regulation and Cognitive Reframing Participants are introduced to the concept and skill of self-regulation. We also offer a Feelings ID Card to help participants personalize how they show up when they are dysregulated, and provide effective questions that aid in cognitive reframing during difficult interactions.

Segment 4: Becoming a Feelings Detective Participants continue to practice the skill of self-regulation and are introduced to a storytelling technique that sharpens their ability to detect another’s emotional state. They also hone the ability to listen, identify and practice empathic responsiveness, and gain tools that aid in co-regulation.

Segment 5: Restorative Conversations and Long-term Resiliency In this final episode, participants explore a high-stress scenario and apply all the tools they’ve learned to achieve desired resiliency outcomes. We also create strategies for one-on-one, restorative conversations with a student, while maintaining effective learning for the whole classroom.
